If you're looking for one of the most unique and visually striking locations for photos in the Dallas area, Mandalay Canal Walk in Las Colinas is hard to beat. With its European-inspired architecture, scenic waterways, and beautiful light, it’s a perfect setting for everything from surprise proposals to couples sessions and solo portraits.
As a photographer serving the Dallas–Fort Worth area, this is one of my favorite locations for creating timeless, natural images with a refined, romantic feel.

Texas meets the Mediterranean
This unique location is more similar to a Venetian Canal in the beautiful Mediterranean than a busting city deep in the heart of Texas. Mandalay Canal Walk offers a look and feel that’s completely different from typical parks or open fields. The combination of water, stone walkways, bridges, and surrounding architecture creates a setting that feels elevated and special. As you stroll along the cobblestone canal, you’ll notice the gentle flow of water, charming bridges, and lush landscaping that create a calm environment. If you're lucky, you may even spot a gondola passing by, lovers onboard being serenaded by a gondolier. This location is truly one of a kind and provides a stunning backdrop for your photos. The stunning environment makes it ideal for special occasions like proposals, engagements and senior/graduation sessions.
Why it's so great for photos
Nobody wants all of the images in their gallery to look the same, and that's never a concern at this stunning location. One of the best things about the Mandalay Canal Walk is the remarkable variety of backdrops it offers within a compact area. With very limited walking, you have access to an array of picturesque scenes that can transform an ordinary photo gallery into a visual narrative filled with charm and character.
Water reflections that add depth and interest to your photos
Stone bridges, cobblestone walkways and a majestic archway create a timeless feel
Gorgeous architecture with wrought iron accents provide an elegant environment
Plant-life and trees that soften the scene and add natural colors

What to Wear for Your Session
The setting here pairs beautifully with elevated, neutral tones.
I recommend:
Soft, neutral colors (beige, cream, earth tones)
Flowy dresses or well-fitted, classic outfits
Avoiding overly bold patterns that compete with the environment
The goal is to complement the setting—not distract from it.

Tips for a Smooth Photoshoot Experience
To make the most of your session:
Arrive a few minutes early to get comfortable with the area
Keep things simple—this location does a lot of the work for you
Focus on connection rather than perfection
The more relaxed you are, the more natural and meaningful your photos will feel.

The Best Time for a Photoshoot
Lighting makes all the difference here.
For the best results:
Schedule your session during golden hour (just before sunset)
Weekdays are ideal for fewer crowds
Early mornings can also work for a quieter, more private experience
Because this is a popular destination, timing strategically helps create a more relaxed and uninterrupted session.

Planning a Proposal at Mandalay Canal
Mandalay Canal Walk is one of the most popular proposal locations in the Dallas area—and for good reason.
It offers:
A naturally romantic setting
Multiple discreet vantage points for photography
Enough space to keep the moment private while still feeling special
If you're planning a proposal here, I’ll help you:
Choose the exact location
Plan timing for the best lighting and flow
Capture the moment discreetly so your partner remains completely surprised
After the proposal, we can transition into a short engagement session to celebrate and capture additional portraits.
